Improve access to fresh, healthy food

Since 2007, Ceres’ core program, Healing Meals for Healthy Communities, has created and delivered organic, nourishing meals for thousands of people experiencing health crisis. With an overarching commitment to Food as Medicine, Ceres meals help our clients with serious illness by relieving stress, preventing malnutrition, and connecting nourishing food to health. We use all organic foods, mostly fresh and local, to maximize our meals’ healing power and reduce exposure to toxins. Notably, we are the only meal service that puts youth at the heart of this work. All of our medically tailored meals are prepared by volunteers ages 14-22 enrolled in our Youth Development Program.

Provide hunger relief for vulnerable populations

CORA is a nonprofit organization that serves residents in need of food within Chatham County. Our ultimate goal at CORA is to build a community without hunger by soliciting, collecting, and purchasing food for distribution through our Food Pantry. CORA is meeting food insecurity needs for families making 200% of the poverty level ($51,500/year for a family of four). CORA is a critical source of relief that will provide safe and nutritious foods to approximately 18,000 food-insecure individuals in Chatham County 2019/2020. CORA serves any Chatham County resident who needs emergency food through our Food Pantry. CORA's Pantry and Mobile Market are based upon the late John Arnold's concept of the client-choice food pantry model. This concept is among the most revolutionary reforms to the U.S. food pantry system. Choice pantries allow families to select from a wide variety of foods that meet their personal dietary needs. CORA Food Pantry is set up like a grocery store, and families “shop” for their own food with the helpful knowledge of a volunteer.

Cornucopia provides hands-on education about nutrition, horticulture, environmentalism, and community. We operate an educational farm with outdoor growing areas, three high tunnels and a pollinator habitat. It is the hub of Farm to Fork, one of three programs we offer. The farm is centrally located in our school district, across from the high school. We have a history of hands-on education that highlights the importance of nutrition, environmental awareness, and community; while delivering solid academic work that satisfies state and federal education goals. Our farm production has expanded into a vibrant, living, outdoor classroom. Students will have opportunities to explore how their food grows, participate in farming, and eat organically-grown vegetables.
