Seed Savers Exchange’s mission is to conserve and promote America’s culturally diverse but endangered garden and food crop heritage for current and future generations by collecting, growing, and sharing heirloom seeds and plants. Requests for seeds are flowing in via multiple channels, and we are working to keep our employees safe while meeting the sharply increased demand for seeds—symbols of security, hope, and resilience—in these uncertain times. Enhancing access to open-pollinated seeds directly impacts access to fresh, healthy food. Whether it’s free seeds being sent to a community garden growing for their neighborhood, or to a gardener whose land was destroyed by a natural disaster so they can start anew, ancestral seeds returned to their Indigenous communities, or a connection made on the Exchange through which an experienced gardener shares seeds and how to grow them with someone new to gardening, SSE’s work holds great value, particularly now. The relevance of growing our own food, saving seeds, and sharing them with others will be truly profound and critical in the days ahead. SSE is not only doing this vital work, we are here to encourage and educate others to do it as well.

Soil Born Farms Urban Agriculture & Education Project

Soil Born Farms’ mission is to create an urban agriculture and education project that empowers people to participate in a local food system that encourages healthy living, nurtures the environment and grows a sustainable community. Our 55-acre organic farm is a regional center for education about food, health and the environment. Soil Born Farms’ work has elevated awareness of urban food production as a means for improving individual health, neighborhood cohesion and environmental stewardship. Since 2004 our non-profit has run interconnected programs toward the creation of a sustainable urban food system. These include: the on-farm youth education programs outlined in this proposal; a school garden initiative that integrates garden learning into school campuses; a gleaning program that harvests thousands of pounds of produce for people in need; training programs for urban farmers and home gardeners; and a cooking education program that teaches people to prepare fresh, healthy meals. Organic farming is at the heart of everything we do – our produce is distributed through food pantries and sold through our Farm Stand and CSA shares. 20,000 visitors per year experience our market farm, orchard, farm stand, youth garden, learning kitchen, creek habitat, and outdoor classroom. Our land is more than just a farm - it is a refuge of open space, a culture of healthy living, a learning ground for land stewardship, and a place where people find connection to each other.

Southside Community Land Trust’s mission is to provide access to land, education & other resources so people in Rhode Island can grow food in environmentally sustainable ways & create community food systems where locally grown, affordable and healthy food is available to all. Since 1981, SCLT has significantly increased the supply of fresh produce & the number of farmers, markets & acreage for food production in the state, while promoting programs & policies to build a more equitable food system. SCLT works with residents and stakeholders in communities across Northern Rhode Island to increase affordable access to healthy food. Our programs generate new economic opportunities for both adults and young people, building a stronger local food system and improving health outcomes.

SEI’s Climate Corps Education Outside (CCEO) program trains educators to plant the seeds of science and ecoliteracy to grow environmental leaders. We envision a world where all students have equitable access to food, nutrition, and ecoliteracy education. SEI, the administer of the CCEO program, is a nonprofit that builds leaders to drive sustainability solutions, partnering with schools and communities for 20+ years to develop elementary school to early career sustainability pathways.

We work with a diverse network of local stakeholders, including community members, government and non-profit allies, and business supporters, to facilitate a variety of sustainability and social equity initiatives that improve the quality of life for all in Whatcom, Skagit, San Juan, and Island County, with a focus on the long-term health of our environment.
The Food Trust
The Food Trust (TFT) is a nationally recognized nonprofit dedicated to ensuring everyone has access to affordable, nutritious food and information to make healthy decisions. Headquartered in Philadelphia, TFT works with neighborhoods, schools, grocers, farmers and policymakers in the city and across the country to develop a comprehensive approach to improved food access that combines nutrition education and greater availability of affordable, healthy food. Last year, TFT reached nearly 600,000 children and adults in high-need urban and rural communities across the U.S. through: operating farmers markets; implementing and supporting nutrition incentives programs to make fresh fruits and vegetables more affordable in retail settings and through healthcare partnerships; providing training and TA for corner store owners who want to sell healthier items, a model for other communities across the nation; providing nutrition education to children and adults in schools and communities; connecting young children and their families to fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables, and teach kids at as early an age how food grows through gardening and other learning opportunities; working at local, state and national levels to advocate for policy changes that will bring grocery stores and other healthy food outlets to communities that need them.

The mission of the Jonnycake Center of Peace Dale is to provide basic needs, resources, and hope to our community members. Our vision is a community without hunger and poverty where everyone can reach their full potential and improve their quality of life. We are aware of the benefits of a nutritional and healthy diet. According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, eating enough fruits and vegetables is linked to a lower risk of many chronic diseases and may help protect against certain types of cancer. We are also aware of how difficult it is for low-income households who use our food pantry to afford many of the basics which would be considered an essential part of a healthy diet, including fresh produce. Not only are such items often more expensive than heavily processed foods, but many of our members also live in rural areas which are considered food deserts due to the lack of nearby grocery stores.

The Land Connection (TLC) trains farmers in resilient, restorative farming techniques; informs the public about the sources of our food and why that matters; and works to protect and enhance farmland so that we, and generations to come, will have clean air and water, fertile soil, and healthy, delicious food. We envision a community-based food system in which every farmer has the opportunity to grow food in a sustainable manner, and every person can access local and organic foods.
