Trellis For Tomorrow
Trellis for Tomorrow fosters compassion and resilience in people and inspires them to build sustainable communities. Our work positively impacts food security by engaging youth in garden-based, paid work experiences, and organizational partners in on-site volunteer garden work. Both initiatives provide fresh produce to neighbors in need and ultimately improve food system sustainability in the greater Philadelphia area.

The mission of the Center for Agroecology & Sustainable Food Systems (CASFS or the Center) is to research, develop, and advance sustainable food and agricultural systems that are environmentally sound, economically viable, socially responsible, nonexploitative, and that serve as a foundation for future generations. Our certified-organic 33-acre farm and 3-acre garden are used for undergraduate education, training in organic farming and gardening, and research on organic production methods. Our strategic planning process, still underway during the COVID-19 campus closure, is creating a roadmap for even more impactful work in our programmatic areas of research, education, extension, and public service. Agroecological research and organic farming trials are being planned for our 33-acre farm site along with organic crop production for food insecure students and community member served through our CSA and farm stand outlets. The new undergraduate major in Agroecology will be launched this fall and a new Apprenticeship course is being planned for 2021 along with short courses in organic farming and gardening topics. New initiatives will also expand our extension, education, and information online and at our sites through a new free lecture series, seasonal tours, organic gardening workshops, and free online publications and instructional videos.

The Fulton Fresh Mobile Market was created in 2008 to educate residents living in communities designated as food deserts on the importance of fresh, in-season produce. Each week of the program, Fulton Fresh staff provide a 30-minute UGA Extension SNAP-Ed nutrition education food demonstration to market attendees, who are also provided with a free 8-10lb bag of in-season produce from our mobile market. After several years of successful adult programming, Fulton Fresh will add a Kids’ Market summer program this year. By incorporating different generations, Fulton Fresh is improving nutrition and combating adult and childhood obesity in Fulton County with hands-on learning and fresh food access.

The Food Pantry purchases food from the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia and two local grocers. We also receive donated food from individuals and, on occasion, from other charitable organizations. The food is stored in our warehouse and boxed for clients based on family size and composition. The boxes are given to families who qualify by being residents of White County and meeting USDA poverty thresholds.
