Improve access to fresh, healthy food (discontinued)

At Farmshare Austin, our mission is to grow a healthy, just and equitable local food system by increasing community food access and cultivating new farmers. We envision a future of resilient local food economies that ensures equitable access to food and to the resources needed to farm. Farmshare Austin builds bridges between the produce grown on our 10-acre certified organic farm in Eastern Travis County and food access programs reaching food insecure communities in Central Texas.

Provide hunger relief for vulnerable populations (discontinued)

FFT’s goal is to alleviate weekend food insecurity among students whose families are low income. FFT’s only program is to provide food so students experiencing poverty can leave school on Friday afternoon with the confidence that they will be able to prepare and eat simple meals throughout the weekend. In its elementary and middle schools, FFT’s volunteers pack and distribute PowerSacks that contain nonperishable items that can feed a family of four two meals, plus snacks. In all high schools and some middle and elementary schools, FFT operates food pantries where students can select the foods they prefer. The program delivers food to each school throughout the school year (36 weeks). Deliveries are made to each school every other Friday so FFT can serve more schools than it would otherwise be able to, given funding limitations. However, because almost every family has at least two students attending the school, most families will receive two PowerSacks, which will provide enough food for two weekends.

Advance childhood nutrition education (discontinued)

FoodCorps believes in a future where every child—regardless of race, place, or class—gets the nourishment they need to thrive. We partner with people dedicated to creating that future: from educators and school leaders, to national alliances and community-based organizations, to our AmeriCorps service members and students themselves. We collaborate with these peers to demonstrate the power of food in schools and ensure our country’s systems work together to nurture every child’s potential.  For nearly a decade, FoodCorps has collaborated with school communities to connect kids to healthy food. Our culturally responsive direct service program centers our community partners’ visions to transform schools into places where kids learn about healthy food, fall in love with it, and eat it every day. We leverage our school-by-school impact to influence changes in the systems, policies, and culture that shape our kids' relationship with food.

The mission of FoodRecovery.org is to recover surplus food that would be sent to landfills. While hunger continues to be one of the most urgent issues, the United States wastes 119 billion pounds of food. According to the USDA, over one third of food produced goes to waste, while 1 in 8 individuals are food insecure. The issue of hunger and wasted food seem counterintuitive, and FoodRecovery.org exists to connect these issues to fight food insecurity and protect our environment. All for free.
